Memories of a great man
It would be difficult to add to the warm and eloquent tributes to John Fordham from Peter Gorton and David Jones in last week’s Free Press – covering as they did so much of his outstanding leadership at Spalding Grammar School – but perhaps I can add a few further touches to the picture.
John made himself accessible from the start. “My door is always open,” I remember him saying in his first staff meeting. And it always was open, literally – to staff, pupils, parents and visitors.
He was a yea-sayer, ready to encourage not only academic excellence but also both teaching initiatives and ambitious extra-curricular projects; whether it was week-long field trips, innovative examination options, unorthodox ways of setting out a classroom, 24-hour charity fundraising marathons or concert band tours to…
