When Joint Entrance Exam (JEE)-Advanced , one of the most competitive tests in India, saw a sharp dip in the number of qualifying students, the government intervened and for the first time IITs lowered an already-announced cut-off.

What happened?
In JEE-Advanced 2018, 18,138 candidates were declared eligible for admission to 11,279 IIT seats. The number of candidates who qualified the exam has always been at least twice the number of seats on offer. This year, however, the 18,138 students on the merit list were only 1.6 times the total seats, making it the smallest number of qualified candidates since 2012.

Why did the government intervene?
The IIT system itself assessed at least 1,000 seats could go vacant this year with such a short merit list….
