The District Administration claimed that achieving the target of procuring the paddy would be difficult this year as basmati was being purchased by private agencies only. It is learnt that government agencies are purchasing the remaining varieties of paddy.

The District Food and Civil Supply controller, Ludhiana, Sona Thind, said, “Last year, we procured as many as 15 lakh metric tonnes (MT) of paddy in Ludhiana. But this year, as more farmers have produced paddy, so achieving the set targets will be a bit difficult.”

As compared to the last year, the city mandis have received six times the quantity of basmati this year.
