NEW DELHI: The Congress attempted to turn the tables on Prime Minister Narendra Modi by taking the same dig at the ruling government that UPA II was subjected to in June 2013.

With the rupee falling steeply and touching its lowest levels yet, Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari on Friday said, “In 2013, PM Modi said there’s a competition between Congress and rupee over who will fall lower. Today the rupee is trading at Rs 69.1 to a dollar. It seems the competition is now between BJP and rupee.”

Tewari also drew on external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj’s tweet from the same period, in which she said the rupee had lost its value and the Prime Minister — Manmohan Singh at the time — his place. Tweets by the PM and external affairs minister, Tewari said, appeared to apply squarely to the present-day BJP government.
