GMAT Preparation Online | GMAT Statistics Practice Question #17 | Standard Deviation Practice Question

A GMAT 600 level easy to medium difficulty problem solving practice question in standard deviation. The question helps consolidate the theory behind computing the standard deviation when all numbers in a sample are multiplied by the same factor or increased by a constant.

Question
The standard deviation of four positive numbers p, q, r and s is d. What is the standard deviation of (2p – 2), (2q – 2), (2r – 2) and (2s – 2)?

The solution to the question is based on the two results about standard deviation:
1. What happens to the standard deviation of a set if a constant k is multiplied to each element in the set?
2. What happens to the standard deviation of a set if a constant ‘k’ is added to each element of a set?
