    The idiom Hit below the belt in general sense refers to words or actions towards another person that is inappropriate, unjust, insulting or too personal to be mentioned.

    In the terminology of sports it refers to boxing where a boxer unfairly strikes his opponent below the best which is a violation of the rule.
