The role that an optional subject plays in the Civil Services Examination cannot be underestimated. It can either make or break one’s dream of securing a place in the prestigious Indian Civil Services.

The Optional Subject covers 500 marks in the UPSC (Mains) Examination. When we go through the statistics of the marks obtained by candidates across the country, we observe that it can play a decisive role in a candidate receiving a call-up for the interview or not.

Why normalization for science subjects? Electrical engg is itself a huge syllabus, so even after scoring 350+ marks, loosing marks due to normalization is unfair. I am from ece background..suggestion for rest of the topics..specially power system and power transmission

Sir, I am a tablet course student, I've appeared twice in the WBCS Examination, and my optional subject there is History, although I chose Economics in Graduation, I have a keen interest in History. Sir, my question is, is History a good choice for optional paper? I am familiar with History as a subject, and have required books as well.

    Hello Sir,

Thanks for the useful information. I have a question as you said if we score 500 out of 500 in mathematics as optional subject then how will they consider it. Can you please give me clear explanation and I’m a student of Byju’s tab course. If I take the optional as Literature or Mathematics would Byju’s provide the material and guidance also videos or not. As per my understanding Byju’s should provide everything related to the course based students’s optional subjects.
